Four protesters in police uniforms went onto the field shortly after intermission and were quickly nabbed by match stewards.
In a statement, Pussy Riot explained that the police uniforms represented illegal arrests and unfounded imprisonment of political prisoners; the group cited the example of Oleg Sentsov, who faces 20 years in prison for "conspiracy to commit terror acts" after protesting the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The protest even caught the attention of French player Kylian Mbappé, who seemed to approve.

"The FIFA World Cup has reminded us of the possibilities of the heavenly policeman in the Great Russia of the future, but the earthly policeman, entering the ruleless game breaks our world apart," the statement reads.
