With people still raging over NES Classic Edition's abrupt discontinuation, free erotic movies and hype through the roof for the upcoming SNES Classic Edition, it feels inevitable that a Nintendo 64 Classic Edition will be released in the future.
And now we might have our first clue that it could be coming. New trademark filings discovered by NeoGaf user Rösti could suggest Nintendo is working on (or considering working on) a miniaturized N64.
SEE ALSO: Tiny keychain-sized Game Boy is infinitely better than the SNES ClassicBased on the filings, it appears Nintendo applied for four trademarks related to its console controllers with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on July 18.
The illustrations don't explicitly reveal a Nintendo 64 Classic, but one of the four trademark applications includes a graphic of the 1996 console's controller. The other three trademarks are for an NES, SNES, and Nintendo Switch controller.
While the revelation of the Nintendo 64 controller trademark isn't confirmation that an N64 remake is actually coming -- the trademarks could just as easily be for something else, like a Virtual Console for Nintendo Switch -- plenty of fans have convinced themselves it could be a hint for the console.
"Looking at the other trademarks, they're the logos used on the top of the boxes for the Minis," writes NeoGaf member Toni Codrea. "It's happening." Maybe...but maybe not.
Examining the NES and SNES box art images, it would appear the trademark logos certainly match up, but what's up with the Nintendo Switch trademark application then? Why's that included with the retro controllers? Only Nintendo knows that answer, though it seems likely that it could be related to future Virtual Console support.
Still, if Nintendo does release a Nintendo 64 Classic, which games would be included, and how many? The NES Classic came with 30 pre-installed classics and the SNES will have 21, including the never-before-released Star Fox 2. If Nintendo follows this trend, a Nintendo 64 Classic would have, like, 10-12 games.
We polled the Mashable Tech and Games teams, and these are the top 12 games (in no specific order) we'd want the console to come with:
Super Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
GoldenEye 007
Super Smash Bros
Paper Mario
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Turok 64
Pokémon Snap
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Banjo Kazooie
Star Fox 64
Donkey Kong 64
Ball's in your court, Nintendo. You know what to do. Or, you know, just give us Virtual Console on Switch. That'd be fine, too.
