As America came to grips with the upset electoral victory of Donald J. Trump for president,Hindi Archives Secretary of State John Kerry -- himself a former presidential candidate -- was as far away from Washington as humanly possible.
On Thursday, Kerry became the highest-ranking U.S. official ever to visit Antarctica. He traveled to McMurdo Station, which is operated by the National Science Foundation. Kerry is getting a firsthand glimpse of the effects of climate change in Antarctica and the science research conducted there.
According to the State Department, Kerry is also planning to travel to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. With these travels, Kerry also becomes the first secretary of state to set foot on both of the world's land-based ice sheets, having visited Greenland in 2015. From Antarctica, Kerry will head to Morocco, where U.N. climate talks are taking place.
